First tram christened in Oberhausen

On July 15, District Mayor Thomas Kray and STOAG Managing Director Werner Overkamp christened Oberhausen's first tram "Oberhausen-Osterfeld".

The reason for the tram christening is the 125th anniversary of the transport company. Electric trams have been running through Oberhausen since 1897, with a 28-year break from 1968-1996.

The christening was preceded by a vote in which the STOAG called on the citizens of Oberhausen to choose one of three namesakes. The choice was between Oberhausen's twin towns, constellations or the districts through which line 112 runs. The vote of Oberhausen was clear: 49% of the votes fell on the districts, 27% on the twin towns. 24% of the participants would have liked constellations as names on the trams.

The naming of trams is a tradition in some cities, but for Oberhausen the naming is a premiere. The decorated train with the car number 207 was christened on behalf of all six vehicles.

The three district representatives recited the baptismal motto together: “From Sterkrade to Mülheim-Ruhr, I wish you always a safe journey on your tour. You should always drive safely, good Oberhausen tram. Always have a good trip in the city area, which you will be around for a long time to come.” The tram was then given the name Oberhausen Osterfeld.

STOAG came up with something very special for the christening act itself: Instead of sparkling wine, the track was christened with filled water balls - great fun for everyone involved. The five other trams are named Oberhausen Styrum, Alt-Oberhausen, Oberhausen Neue Mitte, Oberhausen Eisenheim and Oberhausen Sterkrade.
