Looking for favorite bus driver at STOAG

Once again, passengers across Germany can nominate their favorite bus driver and tell their personal bus story.

Already in 2023, over 2.300 contributions were submitted nationwide and 22 stories were selected. STOAG bus driver Thorsten Mielke was one of the nominated drivers in the last competition with his story. At STOAG, bus drivers are on the road for customers around the clock, on weekends and on public holidays. Unfortunately, there is hardly any public recognition for this. This is precisely why STOAG is particularly pleased that Thorsten Mielke's efforts were recognized in this way last year. And STOAG hopes all the more for moving and beautiful stories from Oberhausen again this year.

Since the beginning of March, many personal stories have been received from all over Germany. “We are overwhelmed by the nationwide response that our Favorite Bus Driver competition has already generated - there are already 2.000 stories from all regions of the country thanking everyday heroes. In addition to touching thanks, the stories report truly extraordinary achievements,” says Werner Overkamp, Managing Director of STOAG and member of the jury that selects the most beautiful stories.

The “Favorite Bus Driver 2024” competition is a joint initiative of the PRO BAHN passenger association, DB Regio, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) and the Federal Association of German Bus Companies (bdo) and runs until May 17, 2024.

At www.lieblingsbusfahrerIn.de, passengers can tell their own personal story and nominate their favorite bus driver. A diverse jury will select the most beautiful stories from all submissions and choose the favorite bus driver of 2024. The people who submitted winning stories will receive a small thank you.

The industry in numbers

Around 100.000 bus drivers are currently in commercial employment throughout Germany. Most recently, every second company stated that they had restricted operations at least temporarily for personnel reasons. More than half of all bus drivers are older than 50 years. This implies that around 2030 to 4.000 skilled workers will retire every year by 6.000. The industry assumes that a total of around 20.000 bus drivers are already missing from public and private bus companies in Germany. There are currently over 10.000 open jobs in all areas to be found through the industry-wide employer initiative and the local job market: www.in-dir-steckt-zukunft.de/
