The charging system

To charge the batteries, the direct current for fast charging is drawn from both a substation and a tram catenary. The battery vehicles of other modes of transport can also be charged quickly from the existing infrastructure. To demonstrate this, the charging energy for three car quick-charging stations has also been implemented at the Sterade train station.

The charging energy for the electric buses is taken on the one hand from the Neumarkt substation of the tram in the Sterkrade district, and on the other directly from the catenary at Sterkrade station.
The following figure shows the principle of energy extraction from the Neumarkt substation.

Removal of the charging energy from the Neumarkt substation
It is particularly characterized in that not only can the components of the substation be used to generate the direct voltage, but the high-performance charger can also be accommodated in the substation for regulating the charging current of the batteries. Accordingly, no further housing in the form of a building or a container has to be erected to accommodate the components for fast charging the batteries of the electric bus.

The following figure illustrates the principle of drawing energy from the tram catenary at Sterkrade station. Systems based on this principle are used in particular when there are optimally located quick charging options, e.g. B. at junctions of several bus lines, located in the vicinity of a catenary system.

In this case, the direct current for fast charging the batteries of the electric bus is taken from the catenary using a mast switch. A circuit breaker for short-circuit protection is located in the outdoor cabinet 1. At the entrance of the cabinet, a surge arrester protects the system against overvoltages caused by lightning, etc. The quick charger for regulating the charging current of the batteries is housed in the outdoor cabinet 2.

The following figure shows the expansion of the system for drawing off the charging energy for quick charging of the batteries of a battery bus at Sterkrade station and three additional 50 kW quick charging columns for cars.Electric cars can, depending on the manufacturer, be equipped with a quick charging function in addition to the normal charging connection. To support electromobility here too, Energieversorgung Oberhausen AG has set up two publicly accessible quick charging stations in Oberhausen. The third fast charging station is reserved for company vehicles of STOAG and other transport companies in the VRR.

Use in regular services
Two electric buses are used on lines 962 (circuit length 15,6 km) and 966 (circuit length 13,3 km) in the Oberhausen city area. Both lines run every 60 minutes, so that only one vehicle is required at a time. After each round trip, the bus battery is quickly charged with 220 kW at the terminus within about ten minutes.
