Electromobility in Oberhausen
Advantage of the electric bus
In contrast to buses with conventional diesel drives or hybrid buses, there is no combustion process in the drives of electric buses. Therefore, when the buses are operated, no pollutants in the form of soot particles and nitrogen oxides are produced, and there is no need for costly after-treatment.
The use of the buses supports the committed efforts to reduce particulate matter emissions in metropolitan areas.
The drives in electric buses are much more energy efficient than those in diesel buses. The ability of the drives to feed energy back into the batteries when the bus brakes (recuperation) leads to a further improvement in energy efficiency. Electric buses are therefore climate-friendly. If they are fed with electricity from renewable energy sources - as with STOAG - they can even be described as CO2-free.
The drives of electric buses are very simple. Since they already develop full torque while stationary, they do not need a complex multi-stage gearbox. Due to the constant start-up processes in public transport, their high acceleration capacity is advantageous for efficient operation. Passengers benefit from the significantly lower noise development in the interior compared to conventional diesel buses and the smooth acceleration of the vehicles.
Since there are no combustion processes in the drives of electric buses, these can be implemented with significantly lower noise emissions. Battery buses therefore also support the diverse efforts to reduce the noise level in metropolitan areas.
The maintenance effort of electric buses is no greater than that of diesel buses.
